Thanksgiving in NYC
Andy, Eve, Ben and Eva arrived in Boston last week and we've just spent four fantastic nights in Manhattan, catching up and having fun in the big apple for thanksgiving. It was great to see them again, and everyone who knows Andy will know quite how excited he was about this trip. I think it's fair to say the city that never sleeps didn't disappoint!
The Macy's Thanksgiving parade drew enormous crowds into the heart of Manhattan. Negotiating the masses and police roadblocks with a hangover was an assault on the senses, but seeing the giant balloons of Charlie Brown, Kermit the Frog, Big Bird, Garfield and more tower over you between the skyscraper canyons was a truly awesome sight. We found a great place for our Turkey meal and ended the night in the East Village. The Japanese bar that served sake and super cheap beer was distinctive enough, and the plum wine was a refreshing change, but when I saw the bizarre delicacy at the top of the menu my heart skipped a beat...
Each night we tried out a new area, eating and drinking in the West Village, East Village, Chelsea, and Lower East Side. Our day at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art), fresh from a three year renovation, was probably the highlight of the trip for me. Each floor devoted to a broad medium, the plethora of famous paintings on the top floor alone was worth the visit. A print of Picasso's Three Musicians has hung above the dinner table at my Mum's for as long as I can remember, seeing the original work was a great moment.
