Red Sox on the brink

Baseball is consuming the city; the New York Yankee’s are one win away from knocking the Boston Red Sox out of the playoffs (at the semi-final stage). However I’m beginning to understand what makes the sport so popular in this city. Comparing baseball to cricket is a common mistake, and a massive disservice to baseball! While still in the infancy of understanding the sport, when a city is as consumed with it in this way it’s impossible to resist the allure. 1918 was the last time the Sox won the whole thing, so nobody here has seen them go all the way and yet the whole city loves them. You can’t fault the love for the sport and enthusiasm on display – it’s infectious. If you’d told me a year ago that I’d be cheering on a baseball team in a boston bar with genuine feeling I would have made some sarcastic rebuttal and dismissed the sport entirely. Yet here I am, cheering on the perennial nearly men of baseball and enjoying every minute of it.
