Countdown to a new season

“Soccer” to some, “Football” or “Footy” to the rest of us.

As we sit ion the dawn of a new season, it feels appropriate recall the experience of being amongst the Old Trafford faithful on match-day. I do miss being part of the chants and songs there. This particular song, devoted to Manchester United legend Eric Cantona, is perhaps the most heartfelt and begins somewhere in the stands with a just one fan…

What a friend we have in Jesus

As these first words are heard ten, twenty, fifty, a hundred singers leap into voice…

He`s a savior from afar

Now hundreds of people, perhaps a thousand join in…

What a friend we have in Jesus

All of the Stretford End…

And his name is Cantona...

The stadium erupts…

Ooh Ah Cantona
Ooh Ah Cantona
Ooh Ah, Ooh Ah, Ooh Ah Cantona...

As sixty thousand people around you sing in unison, the hair on your arms stand on end.

Ooh Ah Cantona
Ooh Ah Cantona
Ooh Ah, Ooh Ah, Ooh Ah Cantona...

This song, for a player who retired eight years ago, is still heard without fail at every Manchester United game – home or away.

Two weeks from today, at 12.45pm GMT, a new season begins.

Bring it on, footymania begins. The burning questions are (a) will you get a trophy this season? and (b) will fergie leave at the end of this season or stay on for another?

Arsenal could find it tough this season, having lost Vieira and without a reliable keeper.

Will Liverpool's euro success last year help propel them into the top three?

Man City must be due another relegation battle, can Pearce bring them through it?

P.S. bit torrents of all the games and highlights as they happen at:

See you missed out Chealsea in that run down, what happened? Have they bought themselves the premiership fo a second season and so aren't worth discussing, or did you just forget?

Are you a chelsea fan now Billy? ;) Not much to say about them - they're the best & have the manager & funds to stay on top.

Only Man U have the funds to compete on thier level, so for the sake of an intresting season lets hope we do.

The tragic thing is that I could feel the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end even just reading that. Did I say tragic? I meant brilliant. 11 days to go!

Nice one Si - great news you and Nat got a place sorted out. Will have to drop by when I'm back next.

Good to see your faith in Blackburn’s mediocrity is as firm as ever! ;) I note that your man u statements were weaker than in season past, which I fear is down to our relative lack of success over the last two seasons :( I have a conviction we'll be back on your hate list by the time this season is out :)

So busy I haven't posted in ages but got lots of news to share -a new post is coming soon.
